My life was good, I was married to a good guy.  A military guy. He never talked to his family I never really asked why.  I do know he had a brother who was two years older than him.  We had been married three months before he got shipped off to war.  A week after I found out I was pregnant. On my 6 month check up as I was leaving I got a call from the military telling me there had been a ambush and my husband didn’t make it.  I cried all night holding my belly and telling my baby boy all about his dad.  The following week I went through all his things to locate a number or address to inform his family.  Once I found the address I sent off the letter.  

My son is now almost a year old and I still haven’t heard from his father’s family.  Maybe I didn’t have the right address.  Maybe they really didn’t care. But they were missing out not me!   I had a few things I needed for little Leighton jr’s party so I was shopping when I ran straight into what I thought was a break wall but was a guy who looked like Leighton.   


I looked at her and shook my head.  I wasn’t here to be nice I wanted my nephew and I was here to take him and raise him how my brother would have wanted according to his last letter I received he wasn’t happy with his so called church wife. When I found out she was pregnant with my nephew I had to find her.

Sighing I looked st my boy. “How am I to prove this to him when my options are be a prisoner at his place his parents or run?” Leighton just stared at me then he looked off st Brody and stated to run towards him. Welp looks like he made my decision. I caught up with him and picked him up. I walked up to the car. “How am I to prove to you, I’ve been myself this whole time. If you don’t believe me by now how will I know you will in two seconds? And what’s happens I live in your house? Why can’t I live in my own place?” I was so confused. “Am I in that much danger to were I can’t be on my own?”

“I can offer you a home. You cook and clean for me while I am at work and I’ll provide a stable household, with food and I’ll watch Leighton while you study and work.” I offered. “If you live alone, I can’t promise they won’t hirt you. My parents never come to my house. So you don’t have to worry. I have a yard and state of the art security system with a panic room.”

I sighed.  “I want to work so I can afford things for my son, he needs diapers clothes and food! I can’t and won’t let you support us in those manners!”  I said not really sure why I was even thinking about this.  “I’m not a woman to sleep around either so don’t go expecting that.  I won’t ever be having a relationship again, which mean I’m absolutely abstinenant for the rest of my life so serious don’t even try. Or I will run straight to the cops!”

“Ok, so you want to study.. but I’m offering you help to get a job, I will provide and you repay me with cooking and cleaning until you get enough money to buy your son his own things.” I looked at her “trust me, I won’t be going where my brother has been.” I winked

I sighed. “I want to study and care for him I’ve been doing it for this past year why can’t I do have a job, study, clean and cook for you?” I looked st him. “I can do all that you know!” I ignored his comment about his brother. I didn’t care if that was his reason for not wanted me it was good he didn’t.

“If that’s what you want to do the fine.” It was basically what I had suggested anyway. “I’ll have a room cleared out for you and you both can have that to stay in.”

“Thank you.” I said and sank back down holding Leighton as he looked around. He had no clue. “One more question, what if your parents actually come to your house? I know you said they don’t ever but they may with you telling them whatever it is your telling them about us?”

“Well the change your name.” I shrugged “but if they do, I’ll tell you to hide and you’ll be able to see it on camera before they enter the gate.” I smiled “you worry a lot.”

I sighed.  “I grew up being bounced from house to house, never having a thing.  So maybe what I had didn’t and wouldn’t mean a thing to you but I worked hard for it.  Now it’s all gone!  So yes I worry a lot.”  I looked down at Leighton.  “I need to find a pediatric cardiologist to.  He has this heart condition, at that hotel he had a small episode, it can get bad so he needs to be seen a few times a year.”

I nodded “call your normal GP and get his medical records emailed through.” I kept my eyes on the road. “My brother really didn’t know you were pregnant? He writes about you like he knew.”

I shook my head “no I didn’t get the chance to tell him myself, so unless someone else told him, he didn’t know. I found out two weeks after he left and I kept trying to get ahold of him but every time he wouldn’t answer or the people who did said he couldn’t talk.” I sighed. “Some makes sense now, others I still don’t understand and won’t ever get to but there is nothing I can do, I need to focus on my son and provide for him the best I can.” I sunk down a little more. “So won’t your wife or girlfriend get made that a kid and woman is staying with you? I don’t want to cause any problems for you, well more than I have already I guess. Umm also can I um read those letters some time?”

“No wife or girlfriend. I don’t have time for more than a fuck these days.” I rubbed my neck. “And you can one day, when I trust you a bit more.” I winked not sure how she would react to reading the things he’s said about them both.

I nodded.  “Thank you.”  I just needed to read what he said.  “I think regardless of what is said that it will help me understand him more.”  Sighing.  “I really appreciate you helping.  I’ll pay you back I swear!”

“Fine. I’ll charge you $20 a night and you pay me back when you have a steady income. Until then, you keep the house tidy.” I wasn’t going to take money from her, not when her kid needed it more.

I nodded “deal! And um if you want to have some fun or whatever it is you call it just let me know and Leighton and I will hide.” I know he had needs he made that clear all mean do. I didn’t want to stand in the way and it was his home so he could do anything he wanted.
