lily suffered something tragic.

He laughed “sure keep telling yourself that I’ve seen mum enough times to know something when I see it! I love you, I’m glad you two are together.” I got up and stretched as the nurse walked in she blushed and I winked. “I’ll go call and get ahold of them. No worries sis, you want me to call the others in too?”

“No, don’t get them all here. There’s a lot of us remember.” I laughed, but my smile didn’t reach my eyes. “I’m just hungry, that’s all.” I sighed heavily and went to sit back down and finish eating my bag of chips.

I nodded. “I’ll get more food too prego!” He laughed and walked out by the nurse. He sat down and took a deep breath calling his mums phone over and over.

I waited for Gunnar to come back to the room, it felt like forever but finally he returned and I stood with eagerness “oh god you’re here. I was about to come searching.” I smiled taking his hand “what did they say?” Ever since Noah said what could happen, I was beyond worried.

I smiled.  “Well my counts are good enough for the surgery so it looks like I’m having it in the morning.”  I was so scared.  I looked at my dad who was trying but he was upset.  I looked back at lily.  “Come here sit with me.”

“You’re scaring me Gunnar.” I said softly. “Nate said it was years in hospital last time.. why would you keep this from me? It affects me so much as well.” I blinked back the tears. “You need to tell me everything, right now.”

I sighed “I got diagnosed with a rare brain tumor that turned into cancer. I was really sick for a long time, I was in and out of the hospital for two years. Till they said I was in remission and I was able to go home. I really didn’t think it would come back it’s been a while, and when I woke up with that headache I was just hoping it was nothing.” Taking her in my arms and holding her. “It’s definitely back and worse, the doctor was down there talking to me and he has high hopes but there are chances, chances I may not make it, I may be a complete different person. I may be completely fine but I will always need to get check ups.” I kissed her head. “I’m sorry, I should have told you as soon as I felt sick but I didn’t want you to worry.”

“I want you to always make me worry, because it’s better than keeping it to yourself. Don’t hide that agin, I need you in my life and I don’t care if we have hospital visits each week, I won’t let you go to them alone. I love you.” I leant in, kissing him as the door opened and my mother walked in.

I smiled and pulled back “hello Mrs Cook, I thought you and Mr Cook were celebrating, you should be, I’m okay really.” I said knowing lily would need them if something did happen.

“Don’t worry about us. We’ve had enough celebrating for one day, plus we have a lifetime together for that.” She smiled to herself, if only these kids knew they fun we’d been having. “So, the tumour is back.” 

“You knew!” I asked shocked as I sat up. “Why didn’t you tell me.” 

“I thought you already knew.” She sighed taking a seat. “Anyway, you’re getting the best help possible.”

I smiled. “Yeah the doctor on my case now seems good, he is calming which well is really good.” I looked at lily wanting her back in my arms but I could see she was upset. “I hope you don’t mind lily staying here tonight with me. I want as much as I can get in case something doesn’t go right.”

“Can you stop saying that, stop assuming something will go wrong.” I sighed annoyed as his dad and mum came back over. “You’ll be fine.@

I smiled. “Only if I see your face when I wake up. Then I’ll be the happiest man ever-“. I stopped. “What’s going on out there sounds like someone is getting held out by your dad.”

“Ugh Aunt Taylor and Grandma.” I groaned getting up, and walking to the door. I closed it and came back to the bed, climbing on with him to curl against. “I love you.”

I smiled. “I love you more.” I kissed her head and held her tight. “Lily, what if you are pregnant? Are you going to be mad at me? I’m sorry for screwing up. I love you so much.”

I laughed “I won’t be mad. I doubt I am pregnant, let’s not think about that.” I couldn’t tell him that I would be upset if I was because I just wasn’t ready to be a mother. “I love you.”

I kissed her again and closed my eyes. “Promise me if something happens and you are pregnant you will keep the baby.” I didn’t realize I asked this as I dozed off I didn’t even hear if she said anything I was just so tired.

I didn’t say anything. I kissed his lips and laid my head down beside his, closing my eyes. “I love you so much.” I whispered. When I woke, we were surrounded by doctors and I realised it was morning. My heart racing as panic set in when I knew he was going for surgery.

They took me to another floor to prep me lily by my side the whole time. My mess were kicking in. “I love you so much lily, know this, I want to see your beautiful face when I wake up.” If I do. “Don’t cry baby, it’s going to be a while so try to relax with your brother and family if you need to leave it’s okay too.”

“I won’t be going anywhere. I’m going to be waiting for you and when you wake up, I’ll tell you about all the food I’ve eaten.” I smiled, not letting his hands go “I love you. I love you so much, remember that before surgery, and remember you have to wake up because if I am pregnant I will kick your ass so hard you’ll owe me years worth of trashy reality tv that you hate.” I said as tears filled my eyes “and we have a kitten who misses her daddy.”

I smiled at her. “I love you so much lily your my everything remember that. I know you don’t but I hope you are pregnant I want everything with you.” I sighed as my eyes got heavy. “If I don’t make it promise you will find someone to make you happy and treat you how you deserve to be. Also go look at the tree between our family’s homes, when I was 10 and you were almost 8 I carvered our names in a heart knowing I loved you then.”

“We will have forever to have babies.” I laughed, ignoring the pain in my heart as I held onto him. “I love you.” I kissed him long and hard, pulling away as they began to wheel him down to the theatre. My heart broken as I feared he wouldn’t make it. I turned and Noah wrapped his arms around me, holding tight while I cried.

I held my sister as they took Gunnar away. “Lily he is going to be okay, he has to be.” I didn’t like seeing her like this she was a mess. “We should find mum and dad.”

I sat with mum not saying much, just resting my head on her shoulder. My eyes tired and sore from all the crying. Hours probably passed, but I didn’t know. I just waited and waited. Finally, doctor walked out and I jumped up half asleep. “How is he? Can I see him?!”

The doctor looked at her uncertain how to tell her. “There’s been some complications, he is stable now but we aren’t done yet. I just wanted to come out and update you. The tumor is bigger than expected and we are doing our best to get it all this time. If we do then he should be able to recover nicely. I’m just worried his body is giving up.”
