Old life... New love..

He lives a sheltered routine life, used to order and schedule. That’s how it’s been since his wife passed. Before she died, they had the same routine and structure. Sex was for pregnancy and straight forward. His children, well mannered and reaching their early teens. 

She’s free spirited and clumsy. Travelling the world one month at a time. Her parents died and left her a trust fund for her to experience life at its best. She knows no schedule, and enjoys living. 

A job takes her to a small town, where she is to take photos of the beauty she finds. Renting a small house next to a large property. She goes over to introduce herself and finds the man less than pleasant.. but it doesn’t bother her and she soon finds herself annoying him for help each day.

How can he let someone new in his life when he had lost his only one. Everything she does, says, wears.. he compares it to her and when they become something more, he finds himself still saying she’s doing things wrongly.. can he let go of his past, and become something more with the future? and when he discovers old diaries in the attic that details a sordid affair with her ex boss, is it too late to see what he could have had.

I sighed.  “I’m sorry.”  I said and walked away hating what I did. Going back to my office and reading more.  After a while of reading and throwing shit around I realized the kids will be home soon.  “My Mary was having a affair.”  I was pissed and confused she said some things about me that I thought she was okay with but I guess everyone is right I’m a jerk.

“Dad were home!” They came running inside cheerfully. “Can we invite Tessa for dinner? She was crying when checking the mail and it would be nice, I think she’s lonely.” The son said. The daughter looked nervous, “Umm I already asked her, I said you would like her to come too and guess what... she is!” 

Dinner? What the fuck. How could I say no to those kids when they asked so sweetly. Damn my good heart. I went inside to shower and change.

I looked at them.  “She said yes?”  I would have sworn she wouldn’t want to come.  “I don’t know how to make her healthy stuff so she will have to eat steak.”  I said shaking my head.  I prepared our dinner as the kids did their homework.  I kept thinking of how badly I hurt this young woman and how badly I screwed up with Mary.

I came over with dessert, a raspberry chocolate cheesecake from the store that I guessed they would like. I walked about about to knock when he door flew open and the kids came out “you want to see my room? No mine first! Please come to mine!” They all said at once. I laughed smiling “Umm how about i put this in the fridge and then you can show me where your rooms are.” I felt a bundle of nerves when I walked inside the house and he was in the kitchen. “I’ll just have veggies.” I said noticing the steaks to fry up.

I turned and looked at her.  “I’m surprised you came, thank you and I’ll eat your meat.”  Shit that didn’t sound right.  “Your steak I’ll eat it I mean.”  I said and turned and blushed.  After knowing what Mary had down I felt different like maybe I could have another woman but I didn’t feel that I was worthy of another.

“Well I was wasn’t going to but I couldn’t say no to them three.” I looked over at the kids waiting for me. “And trust me, you won’t be eating anything of mine ever.” I couldn’t even look at him. “I’ll be going to the waterfall tomorrow. Just informing you.”

I nodded.  “Okay I’ll see you then.”  I didn’t turn around knowing she made it clear she hat d me and had every right to.  Once we sat down for dinner I piled her plate with vegetables and made sure she wasn’t close to me.  The kids talked and asked her questions as I sat there listening.  Noticing she didn’t look at me once.  Then out of nowhere I asked.  “How’s the vegetables?”

“They’re good, thankyou” It was beyond awkward at dinner. Kenzie looked st me and asked “why don’t you eat meat? Mama said we have to eat it to make our bones stronger.” I felt a tug of guilt hearing her talk about her mother. “Umm, I’ve never actually tried it. I grew up with family who didn’t eat meat, and it’s never bothered me.” Kenzie looked at her dad “maybe you can cook mamas special roast for her to try?”

I looked at her.  “I don’t think I’ll be cooking mamas recipes ever again.” I didn’t mean to say it to the children but everything was so fresh.  They all looked at me.  “I mean I don’t think Tessa would like it.” I got up all of a sudden.  “I have work to do kids please polite.” I looked at Tessa with sadness “Kenzie let me know when dessert is I’d like a piece thank you.”

“What’s wrong with daddy?” Kenzie asked a whisper. I got up, knowing something was up and it was more than what had happened between us. “Don’t worry, finish up and I’ll go check on him” I walked quietly down the Hallway to where a soft glow was coming from a room. I pushed open the door slowly and walked over, sitting against his desk as he sat there. “I’m sorry. I’ve clearly put you in a bad position, and I didn’t mean to make you feel guilty or self hate.. but you’re allowed to enjoy yourself and you was clearly the other night until well..” he thought of her the entire time.

I sighed.  “No I’m sorry it’s not that.”  I picked up Mary’s journal.  “I mean I feel like shit I didn’t know it was your- I was drunk not an excuse.” I then handed it to her.  “It’s this and what’s in it.  I don’t know what to think anymore.”

I opened the book, flipping through pages until i read something I wasn’t expecting. “Anal?” I read. “Look I don’t need a play by play of your sex life” then the book almost fell from my hands when I read more and realised it was about another man not him. “Oh Jesus Christ.. Greg, this is.. I’m so sorry.”

I nodded.  “I wouldn’t be if I was you, I deserve it I guess.”  I looked up and shook my head.  “She could have told me she wasn’t happy, he’ll I wasn’t all that happy with some things but I thought that’s what she wanted and I was okay with that.  She never said a thing, and then the other night I’m just so fucking sorry. I’m a miserable old man as you’d say.  This just Well I cant let the kids know and I just let my anger get the best of me in front of them when Kenzie asked me to make her roast for you.”  I said her like it was a disease.  “I’ve hurt you with what I said and I’m so sorry for that and not even because I found all this out because it was wrong and to let you know I wasn’t thinking of her the whole time I don’t even know why.”  It didn’t matter so why even bother.

“Look maybe it was some big build up, you were having sex and had been pining over your wife for years.” I sighed placing the book down, I picked up another in the shelf that wasn’t a diary and grinned “I have this one, it’s my favourite book ever. Although the sex could be written to make panties wetter but I guess the author either is single or has no clue about sex”

I looked at her.  “You like my book and your right the author sucks at sex.”  I grinned.  It was funny she liked my book but didn’t like me.  I took it from her and signed it with my pin name and my original name too. Also with a message saying I hope this is a better I’m sorry than flowers “There you go it’s yours.”  I watched her read it and smiled a real smile at her.

“Wait, you write these? I have all of your books, and I don’t mean suck at sex literally, I just mean you can tell there’s love between the two but the intimate parts get brushed over. They could have have passionate sex in the river but instead they got dressed and left again.” I had wondered if these were written about his wife. “Anyway, Thankyou and they’re better than flowers.” I noticed the time and stood up “I should go, I have an early start to catch the sunrise.”

I nodded.  “Hey may I see some of your work sometime?”  I asked out if the blue.  I just wanted to see what she was about and you can usually tell with on s work.

“Sure, i have a website you can check out.” I wrote down the website. Ablondeabroad.com “and although you may think it’s just hippie freespirit or whatever you called me, I’m actually paid to go and photograph places that will make tourists want to travel and see the incredible places of the world.” I winked and grinned “alright, I’m out of here before I sleep in and miss it, remember don’t shoot me when you see me walking through your yard at 4am”

I laughed.  “No guns here!”  I winked back and couldn’t believe I did.  She walked out and I watched . Kenzie brought me my dessert and told me they cleaned up and was going to bed.  I cleaned up and went to bed myself thinking of Tessa and her web page I decided I would grab my computer and work in bed.  I looked st her photos and ended up writing about 5 paragraphs of a brand new story.  And some how it sounded like it was about people like us.  The female and male lead sounded like us.  I noticed the time and decided to walk out and see if she was out taking photos.  As I got to the waterfall I saw her and she looked beautiful standing there taking it in.

It was the most incredible view I had laid my eyes on. I couldn’t believe. The waterfall and sunset was just breathtaking. I peeled the dress from my body, naked beneath as I set the camera on timer and walked out into the waterfall, standing so I was submerged waist down and centre in the photograph. I heard the string of flashes and couldn’t wait to see the shot. When I turned, I screamed slightly from not seeing him and slipped on a rock, landing in the water and on my ass.

I ran over to her not caring I was getting wet and helped her up.  “Um I’m sorry.”  I looked down and then back up.  “Do you always um work in the nude?”  I know I was two shades of red maybe three but damnit she was nude and in front of me.

“Well I usually take my photos and then take one of me naked in the spot so I have it for myself.” I then had a brilliant idea. I was wet, my hair was too which would look good. “Ok, take your clothes off and get wet. You want to live a little, then I have an idea. Don’t think, just do it.”

To late I was thinking.  I looked at her and shook my head.  “You aren’t going to sale photos of my naked are you?” I slowly started to take my clothes off still a little sketchy.

I rolled my eyes “no ones going to see anything except your ass.” I didn’t care I was naked, I moved him to where I wanted him and then stood facing him. then I had us facing the waterfall, half submerged in the water like how I took the one alone. “Last one I promise.” I smiled as the sun rose higher, I turned to face him and pressed my body against his
